How to Use Facebook Domain Verification

Edit Domain Verification for Facebook and eclincher

Since May 8, 2018, Facebook has disabled the ability to edit organic or unpublished Page post links unless domain verification is completed in Facebook's Business Manager.

"Domain verification ensures that only the rightful parties can edit link previews that direct to your content."

As part of Facebook's efforts to maintain content integrity, domain verification has been implemented. This process guarantees that only verified owners can modify how their content appears on Facebook. Many publishing apps, including eclincher, rely on link editing to create engaging content for the Facebook community. To preserve this crucial functionality while safeguarding the integrity of publishers' content, only verified link owners have the ability to overwrite link metadata when creating link page posts.

Understanding Domain Verification

Domain Verification allows domain owners to claim ownership of their domain in Facebook's Business Manager. This ownership grants control over editing privileges for links and other content, preventing misuse and unauthorized manipulation.

Who Should Verify Their Domain?

Domain Verification is recommended if:
- You manage assets through Facebook's Business Manager.
- You can upload HTML files to the web root directory or edit DNS TXT records.
- You need to edit Link Page Posts that link to your own content.

Note: If you are verifying a domain on behalf of a client (e.g., as an agency), ensure that the domain is verified in the domain owner's Business Manager for proper ownership.

Implementation Steps

According to Facebook, there are two methods to implement domain verification:
1) Add a DNS TXT entry to your DNS record to confirm domain ownership.
2) Upload an HTML file provided by Facebook to your web directory and confirm ownership in Business Manager.

Adding Your Domain in Business Manager

In Business Manager, click on the Business Settings button in the upper right corner.
Business Settings

In the Business Settings, select the Brand Safety tab and choose Domains from the left side navigation list.
Brand Safety

Click on the Add button and enter your domain in the Add a Domain pop-up dialog.

If you have multiple domains listed, select the domain for which you want to confirm ownership.
Choose the preferred verification method: DNS Verification or HTML File Upload. Note: You only need to use one method.

Facebook Domain Verification in eclincher

Once your domain is verified in Facebook, you're all set in eclincher. When selecting a Facebook profile with a verified domain, an "Edit Verified Domain Preview" button will appear in e-clincher's post editor. By clicking this button, a pop-up window will allow you to edit the image and preview text associated with your link. Please note that Facebook has character limits for the text, so it's important to keep your message concise while still achieving your objectives.
